Thirteen

We did as Adam ordered and made camp for the night. Christopher and I created a makeshift tent. Arthur and Lance had something similar. Adam and Joanna each had their own tent, though Adam set his up near Joanna, playing bodyguard.

Christopher and I offered to let the Locanis use our extra blankets to make a shelter, but they declined, saying they enjoyed sleeping out in the elements. I figured it was because of their werewolf nature. One of the females, Delila, took one of my blankets. She was the smallest, with long blonde hair that touched the backs of her knees.

Once we were all settled and a fire was built, Arthur, Christopher, and I did as we promised and gave the Locanis our food. Joanna also shared some of hers, much to Adam’s dismay.

The Locanis wolfed down the food in record time. Keeping to themselves, they huddled together away from the fire. I caught snippets of their conversation. They spoke of a coming war between the Locanis and the Vaktare. I wondered if that was the reason they were in the human world. If I got the chance, I’d ask them.

Joanna and Adam were on the opposite side of the fire, lost in conversation. I listened in to make sure Adam was treating Joanna with respect. I shouldn’t have worried. He was a lot of bluster to everyone except her. He adored her, loved her.

“If you say it’s a good idea, then I believe you, Red,” Adam said.

She laughed. “My dearest, I believe in you as well, with all of my heart. I can tell you there is so much more to you than you can even imagine right now.”

“How do you know?” He didn’t seem convinced, but I knew what he’d become.

She took his hand in his. “I just do.” A wave of sadness passed over her features, but just as rapidly, she wiped it away.

“You aren’t going to tell me more?” He kissed her cheek.

She shook her head. “No. It’s better that I don’t.”

“Are you listening in on their conversation?” Christopher sat beside me, wrapping his cloak around him. “Didn’t Snow White teach you any manners?” he asked only with slight sarcasm.

“She tried,” I replied.

His eyes searched mine. “I’m teasing.” He winked, scooting closer to me and staring up at the night sky.

“I’m not in a teasing mood,” I said, removing my cloak, wadding it up and setting it on the ground beside me. I figured I’d use it as a pillow later, if I decided to lie down.

“She’s fine.” Christopher brushed some hair from my eyes.

The scent of his blood washed over me. “I know, but I wanted to check. He’s so different than I imagined. I’m not sure whether it’s a good thing.”

“Hey.” He smiled. “He doesn’t know he’s your grandfather yet. He doesn’t know he should love you. He’s young and only focused on his feelings for Joanna.”

“I know,” I said, my fingers finding the bear around my wrist, playing with it.

“Are you talking about me?” Joanna stood in front of us.
